What’s in your makeup??

Hey friends!

I have seriously been wanting to do this makeup post for almost a year now and so I’m so glad that I am taking the time to get down my thoughts when it comes to non-toxic makeup and what I believe is a super scary statistic that everyone, particularly every woman, should be aware of. Here is the statistic – Did you know that the average woman puts 515 synthetic chemicals on her body EVERY day?

When I heard that, I was mortified, friends. Just think about it – what is REALLY in your makeup, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, perfume, lotion – I could go on and on. It’s scary.

My family and I have been on a health + wellness journey for almost 5 years now and in the past 2 years I have really focused on eliminating the toxins and chemicals from my personal care and makeup products. Friends, you can, too. It’s important that you do.

Get this, “regulations have not changed since 1938. In 1938, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act was put into action and does not guarantee the safety of our products. [The act] does not require that cosmetic companies disclose their ingredients to the FDA, or any governmental entity, before they hit the shelves. Right now, we’re the human guinea pigs. Products are on the market, we use them, and if there are any issues that arise, whether that’s immediate allergic reactions or long-term health affects, then they are taken off the shelves. Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $72 million dollars in damages for the death of a woman from ovarian cancer that was caused by the talc in their baby powder. That’s where we’re at. All these products and all these chemicals are innocent until proven guilty.”

Yep, not cool and you know what – it’s infuriating to me.

These toxins are hormone disruptors and are full of carcinogens. They screw with our endocrine systems and our fertility systems, too. They are harmful. End of story.

So, I thought I would share what kind of makeup that I’m using and loving and feel safe and confident in. It’s actually really easy to start making the switch to healthier, non-toxic products. I’ll admit, I’m not a HUGE makeup user. In fact, I love the simple, clean and neutral face, honestly. I definitely would not ever have my own YouTube channel devoted to putting on my makeup because let’s face it – I don’t wear makeup most days (praise the Lord for working from home and not needing to) and what I wear takes me 5 minutes to put on and y’all, I’m good with that. But even if you LOVE makeup, wear a lot of it and are super good at applying it – there are tons of safe, beautiful and good options for you.

The two makeup companies that I use are Savvy Minerals by Young Living and withSimplicity

Let me tell you a bit about each company, what I’ve tried and what I’ve thought about it.

First of all, I used to wear Bare Minerals makeup. Y’all just because it’s mineral makeup does NOT mean it’s non-toxic and good for you. Look into it. Do your research. Download the Think Dirty app and scan what you are using on a daily basis to see just what you’re putting on your skin. Our skin is our largest organ and whatever you apply to it goes into your entire body and can be dangerous. Choose wisely.

When I started to do my own research I stumbled upon some really great all-natural makeup and that’s when I heard about withSimplicity. WithSimplicity was actually the first non-toxic makeup that I purchased and tried. Friends, I bought SO much. From foundation to blush to eyeshadow to mascara – I did an entire overhaul of my makeup stash because I was just sick and tired of being deceived by companies and wanted GOOD all-natural makeup.

I love withSimplicity. I love how it feels on my skin. I love how they are dedicated to producing all-natural makeup and beauty products that are made from organic ingredients. They’re all cruelty free, vegan and gluten free. They have a super wide variety of foundation and colors, which I love and so many different makeup products and beauty products. They’ve actually expanded so much since I first purchased from them. Their customer service is really great too and I loved that!

Some of the products that I tried and loved are:

The Organic Concealer in Bare

I love a good concealer and honestly it was hard for me to find, but this concealer is fabulous! I love how it comes in a compact case and it covers up those under eye dark circles for me, which I appreciate. A LOT. Even though I love mineral makeup and wear my makeup mostly in a light, powdery form, I think every woman needs a good liquid concealer and this is it!

The Organic Mascara in Black

Switching my mascara out was the last thing that I did, but I’m SO glad that I did. This mascara is not only organic and non-toxic, but it stays on SO great and never ends up on my eyelids. It’s very smooth and lasts a long time. It’s a favorite of mine for sure!

Coconut Cream Lip Balm

This lip balm is soooooooo good. Like I told you above, I’m not a huge makeup person and that goes for lipstick, too. I’m much more of a lip gloss/lip balm gal and this lip balm is SO nice. I usually stay away from lip balm because it will seem to dry out my lips, which I know sounds weird, but it does, but this lip balm feels so good and doesn’t have that same affect on me and I love it.

Translucent Setting Powder

You definitely need a good setting powder for your mineral makeup and y’all this powder is the best. It’s translucent and I love that it doesn’t have a lot of sparkle and glitteriness to it. Young Living’s Diamond Veil setting powder just has too much bling to it. Ha! I’m now down with that and so I love that withSimplicity has this great setting powder. It gives a pretty glow without too much sparkle. Perfection!

Mineral Eye Powder in Lace

WithSimplicity’s mineral eye power is gorgeous and Lace is my favorite color. It’s a pearl color and I love how it gives my eyelid a nice pop and brightness. Once again there is not too much sparkle, but just enough to feel luxurious and like you’re glowing.

There are a TON of other great makeup products and beauty products by withSimplicity that I’ve yet to try, but I’m looking forward to trying some more. I highly recommend them if you are looking to move away from your toxic makeup. You can find withSimplicity HERE online or you can visit their store if you live near Harrisonburg, VA.

The other makeup that I use and love is Young Living’s Savvy Minerals makeup. Young Living didn’t come out with their makeup line until June of last year and so I didn’t really have this option in the beginning when I was switching and ditching my bad makeup, but y’all know how I love anything and everything Young Living has and so I was excited to give it a try.

One of the first things I got was actually the beautiful essential brush set. The set is $85, but y’all – these are THE nicest makeup brushes that I have ever had and the quality is just so amazing! The brushes come in this great carrying case that zips and I love how easy it is to travel with them. The foundation brush is one of my favorites. Here are the brushes that you get in it:

• Foundation Brush

• Blush Brush

• Veil Brush

• Blending Brush

• Eyeshadow Brush

It’s just super nice and I’m so thankful to have a really great set of brushes that I know will last me a long time. I’ve also purchased the eyebrow brush & the eyeliner brush, too. I’m super impressed with them all. No more horrible cheap Target brushes for this gal! Your face is worth it, friends – upgrade your makeup brushes!

The other thing that I have tried and loved is the mineral foundation. I am using Cool 1 (what can I say – I’m super pale, ha!) and I want to also get Cool 2. The mineral makeup goes on so smoothly and it honestly feels like I’m wearing nothing on my face which is exactly what you want. It’s light, beautiful and so forgiving. Even though it’s light – it has amazing coverage! A little goes a long way and if you want a heavier application – you can always spritz the foundation with a bit of water or Young Living’s Savvy Minerals Misting Spray, which I also have an love. I’m on my second bottle. I use it mostly for my eyeliner, but love to mist my face after I wash it and, get this, I love to spray my hair with it! Totally helps those fly-aways!

Young Living’s lip balm is so great, too. I love the Grapefruit on my lips, but the Lavender I love … on my eyelids! Yep, you read that right. I heard this trick of using lip balm on the eye lid to set your eye makeup more so that it doesn’t smudge off. It works great, I love the smell and the bonus is my eyelids are nice and soft and the eye makeup goes on like butta!

Wanderlust is my favorite mineral eyeshadow from the Savvy Minerals line so far – once again – it’s got a bit of shimmer and really pops, but there are tons of other great colors to choose from, too. You can wear them wet or dry – mineral makeup is super versatile and forgiving, friends!

The Multi-Tasker is fabulous – it’s a deep dark brown shade and it’s great for filling in your eyebrows, wearing as an eyeliner or better yet – covering up those gray hairs. Yep, guilty as charged! ;)

I also love Jet Setter, which is their eyeliner. I love to spritz a bit of the Misting Spray on my brush and then use it on my eyelids. It’s long-lasting and great. I’m not big on eye makeup, probably because I’m not very talented in the makeup department, but eyeliner really makes the eye pop and so I love to add a bit of it!

Lastly, the lip gloss has to be hands-down one of my favorite products in the Savvy Minerals line. So far I have Abundant and Maven and they are both great. All of the Savvy Minerals lip gloss goes on smooth and has a bit of peppermint essential oil in it, which I love. It moisturizes my lips and they even feel more plump. I highly recommend the lip gloss to anyone and everyone! I’ve even bought my daughter one of the Abundant lip glosses (it’s a lighter shade)! She doesn’t wear makeup, but she loves a good lip gloss and I can feel confident in the ingredients in Young Living’s lip gloss and that makes this Mama happy.

Young Living’s Savvy Minerals line is free from: talc, bismuth, parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals and synthetic fragrances. I’m SO thankful for Young Living and companies like withSimplicity that truly CARE about the ingredients that they put into their products that eventually make their way into our bodies.

It’s SO very important to know WHAT you are putting on your skin. I challenge you to start to make the switch TODAY if you haven’t already, friends.

Here’s a pretty cool thing you might not know about – Young Living even has a starter kit that you can get when you get started with your own account and you can customize it for your skin tone, etc. and it’s a great way to not only start to ditch and switch out your makeup, but you’ll also get your own account and 24% off of all other products that you order, so if you wanted to try some oils, beauty products or even the Thieves cleaner you could totally do that with a discount to boot!

Absolutely love withSimplicity’s makeup! And agree, the Diamond Dust is too shimmery, but I use so little it’ll be a long while before I run out and can go back to my powder from withSimplicity! haha
