The Honeymoon Phase

Just what is the Honeymoon Phase?

In a person who has type 1 diabetes (T1D), the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas are destroyed by immune cells. However, right after the time of diagnosis, some people go through a “honeymoon phase” in which their existing beta cells still function. Stopping the autoimmune response in people with new onset T1D and those who are at risk is one of the chief areas many researchers are focusing on. There are a number of efforts to curb the progression of T1D in newly diagnosed individuals.
